Technically, it is a jacket. However, at first glance and feel it looked more like an intermediate layer. The Columbia Caldorado has the ability to repel Mother Nature. I’m excited to test it. It is also more than a simple shell, as the Columbia Caldorado does so many other things. This is a lightweight, durable layer that can be used in more extreme weather conditions.
Caldorado is an unusual name that I find confusing. What is the origin of this name? At first I thought that the word Colorado should have been Colorado. Does it mean California mixed with Colorado? It doesn’t really matter. I can run comfortably in all kinds of weather and conditions with the Columbia Caldorado Jacket.
Features
First, I want to talk about the word “Insulated”, which obviously is a major component of this jacket since it’s part of its name. Insulation means different things to different people. You may not be picturing the kind of warm, toasty insulation that you might think of. Here, 800 feathers of down do not count! Polartec Alpha insulation is used as a thin layer on the shoulders and front of the jacket. Caldorado was designed for high intensity exercise, and insulation combined with increased body heat helps to provide necessary warmth. The absence of insulation at the back ensures that you can breathe without overheating or getting too sweaty.
Columbia Caldorado Jacket only has 1 pocket. You can store your most important items in the chest pocket: your keys, your money, your ID, your Gel or even your phone. It depends on the size of your phone! The weight of your phone can cause some movement if you are running and unzip your coat. My phone (the normal iPhone and not the Plus model) fit perfectly in the jacket when it was fully zipped. It didn’t cause me any problems. The jacket has no pockets on the sides or back, which is fine with me. I was able to add a water pack without having pockets in my way.
Most of the time, it worked well. It will be interesting to see how the zipper holds up over time, but I would have preferred a thicker version in order to avoid any snags. The outdoor active clothing that I wear and test tends to be more abused, so it would have been nice if they had sacrificed a little weight in favor of substance.
How to use the Columbia Caldorado Insulated jacket.
It is definitely a three-season coat, but winter will be the most common use. This being said, I will not hesitate to bring the Caldorado with me on trips at higher altitudes during summer or fall when some unexpected storms may occur. On the warmer side, I’d wear one layer at 50 degrees.
This jacket was perfect for when the temperature hovered around freezing. I layered a couple of tech t-shirts underneath for sweat absorption. This Columbia Caldorado Insulated Jacket kept me warm and protected against wind. The jacket was breathable enough to keep me cool once I got into a good rhythm.
The Omni-Shield has worked well in both light rain and sleet. Raindrops beaded up and left the jacket dry. The results of a complete downpour could be different, but I’ve yet to try it.
The Columbia Caldorado Insulated jacket
The medium size fits me well. The Columbia Caldorado Insulated Jacket seems to be a little on the large side. It could be done on purpose ….? The jacket does not feel tight and snug like other jackets. It allows for layering to accommodate temperature changes. It won’t be too big if you need to remove it and put it in a bag. The sleeves are also quite long, which I find very convenient. You can cover your hands with ease, and the fabric is stretchy. This will provide you some weather protection without having to bring gloves.
It’s pretty awesome. The “Comfort Stretch” will give you flexibility depending on your build and the underwear that you want to wear. The material is also highly breathable and wicks away moisture.
Columbia provides a handy sizing guide to assist you in making your choice.
A comfortable fit. I am wearing a fairly thick mid-layer underneath in this case.
