Slovenia is the third-greenest country in Europe. Its forests cover over two-thirds the area. This is a land of fairytales, with mountains, clear lakes, rivers and beaches.
VW Campervans are my favorite way to travel in this small area at the center of Europe. From the UK, you can travel to Slovenia and see many beautiful countries along the way. In the UK, it’s easy to obtain insurance for a van and travel around Europe for many months.
Slovenia is a popular holiday destination. These are the nine best reasons to go.
The best places to hike in the United States are within walking distance of where you sleep
Slovenia has the best hiking destinations. The Triglav National park and the Juliana Trail , a 270km trail that runs through the national park.
There are a lot of options to sleep in your campervan next to hiking trails. There are many options, including large, small, adorable or in nature.
You can also choose the view you want to see from your van and it will change every day.
Two for cycling
Slovenia also offers cycling trails. Explore the Adriatic Coast, the Goriska Brda vineyards, the Karst Plateau or the breath-taking mountain paths.
With a campervan equipped with a bicycle rack, you can be flexible and ready to go for a ride whenever you want.
Three for adrenaline sports
Slovenia offers a wide range of adrenaline-filled sports, including those on the rivers and lakes as well as in the valleys and mountains.
Try canyoning, rafting, or other water sports on the Soca River. Paragliding is another way to enjoy the mountain views.
You can also choose to wakeboard in freshwater lakes, or dive into the Adriatic Sea. Surfing is another option if it’s a sport you want to do.
Try other water sports
If you’re looking for a less-frantic water sport with a lot of adrenaline, try stand-up paddle-boarding or kayaking.
Lake Bled is one of many Slovenian lakes. It’s hard to think of a more beautiful setting. Bohinj Lake is a better option for outdoor enthusiasts and those who enjoy water sports. This lake is situated between the mountains and can be explored in a canoe or kayak.
You can also park your campervan and stay just metres away from the water in the best camping sites in the country.
Travel safely with these 5 tips
Slovenia was not badly affected by Covid 19, so is one of the safest places to travel. A campervan trip is a great way to escape mass tourism and enjoy safety.
It is particularly quiet in September, October and November.
Slovenia also ranks among the most crime-free countries on the planet. Ljubljana, for example is a small city but it’s very beautiful and relaxed. You will be transported back to the past by visiting the old town around river Ljubljanica. Camper stops and campgrounds are also available in the city.
6 To enjoy local food
It would be a waste not to prepare a meal on a campervan’s gas stove, which is equipped with kitchen tools. While traveling, you can purchase local products.
As diverse as the landscape of this country, so are its food and drink. If you want to treat yourself, park and enjoy Mediterranean pasta, Adriatic fish or Hungarian Goulash.
7 Explore on quiet roads
Slovenia is a country with a fantastic road network. There are many quiet, scenic road trips that would be perfect for campervans. See the authentic and historic Slovenia away from busy roads.
Because holiday drivers are usually slower, you can enjoy scenery and the views more in a campervan.
Get Cheap Flights from UK
You have two options to get into Slovenia from the UK. Easyjet offers direct flights from London Gatwick airport to Ljubljana Airport. Tickets for return flights start at just EUR27.
Ryanair offers a second option, flying from London Stanstead directly to Trieste. This city is located in Italy, only 100km from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana. Tickets for return flights start at EUR25.
The great liberation
The van offers many benefits, but freedom is the best. The camp can be set up within minutes, so you are able to change locations each day. If you want to, you can move your camp every day, rest, and eat in the most beautiful locations, with a different view, or you can stay at one place for several days. Check the weather before you travel and make adjustments.
Contact Balkan Campers when in Slovenia. They are unique to the area because they have 17 vintage VW campervans, as well as a few more modern ones. Even though they say that you should have no plans, they will assist in creating a road trip itinerary. They will arrange a shuttle for free from Ljubljana airport to the base. For a fee, they can also arrange a shuttle if you’re flying into Trieste.
