We decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and visit the Camping and Caravanning Club site at Sennen Cove during the Bank Holiday Weekend. we stayed at this campsite in autumn 2016, but we enjoyed it so much that we decided to come back on a sunny day. It’s located just a few miles north of Sennen, but the setting is fantastic.
The campsite didn’t disappoint us again. A friendly, enthusiastic staff member gave us an overview of the campsite and offered us several options for pitches. The site was not too crowded as it was just the beginning of the camping season. We had an entire field all to ourselves. It was perfect. It was a very clean, well-maintained site. This is true of all Camping and Caravanning Club campgrounds we’ve visited around the country. There are all the usual facilities on site such as toilets, showers, dishwashing, and an office/shop where you can buy camping supplies.
It was easy to set up the Coleman Rocky Mountain tent and we organized our camping gear for our 2-day stay. It has a hole in the tent that we could have used to run any cables if needed. (We were right near a source of power). This tent is great. The tent is large enough for two people. It also has a blackout sleeping area, which was perfect for the sunny, clear weather. We could then sleep without being disturbed by the rising sun at 5am.
It was a very peaceful and relaxing place. The Max Comfort Raised Air Bed made our relaxation even better. It remained firm after using the electronic air pump. The airbed was very comfortable and I almost forgot we were sleeping on one.
Gwynver Beach is only a short 25-minute walk from the campsite. We were given two routes to take. The weather was perfect and we had a spectacular view of the beach from the cliff. We took advantage of this opportunity to take some pictures.
Vicky and I donned wetsuits as the water was still quite chilly. We then headed out into the ocean, Vicky on her bellyboard and me with my bodyboard. The waves were great, and it was not crowded. We spent the entire first day and the second on the beach.
We made the best of the soft, white sand by playing traditional beach games like frisby. Gwynver beach, unlike Sennen, is great. The beach is nice and big, and dogs are allowed. It was a great time and we were thankful for the short walk back.
Sennen Cove is ideally located. Lands End is a short drive away (or if you prefer, a longer walk), as are Cape Cornwall and many heritage mining sites. Every time we visit this part of Cornwall, it’s a tradition to go to the Minack Theatre and watch a performance, no matter what. Tickets were booked for Thirteen: The Musical. The show was performed not just by local performers but also the stars from the West End. It was a musical packed with upbeat music, dances and talented teenagers. The show was great, and the clear, warm night made it even better. We also saw dolphins swimming in the ocean behind the theater. The sight of 25 dolphins moving eastward, jumping into and out the water was spectacular. It was a truly amazing experience.
We decided to take a stroll on our second day, as the weather was still perfect. We walked back to Gwynver Beach from the campsite to locate a suitable starting point for the Cornish Coastal Path. It takes about 40 minutes for you to walk to Sennen, and another 90 minutes until Lands End. Instead, we chose to walk East.
You will find steep mountains on one side, and boulders to climb over. The view from the opposite side is breathtaking, and Sennen, Lands End, in the distance, are all visible. It’s not too difficult, so you can enjoy a nice stroll. However, it is recommended to wear hiking or trail shoes because of the need for good grip when crossing rocks.
The route will allow you to spot Cornish Choughs. Signposts are placed to show this area as a place where I saw these birds during my walk along the coast last year. Despite living in Cornwall my whole life, i had never seen one before. The warm weather brought out two Choughs to look for food. The Choughs communicated with a cute sound and then hopped down and up the hillside in search of bugs and worms. The sight was beautiful and added to the special morning.
It is a must to walk the Cornish Coastal Route in this region. It is a stunning area and the views will make you friends jealous.
We drove to Sennen Cove, which is less than 5 minutes away from our campsite. Then we parked up on the hill overlooking the beach. Many people were also trying to see the sunset. The views were equally stunning as we walked along the path to the actual beach.
A spectacular sea mist was rolling towards the shore in the distance. As the mist crept towards us, we were suddenly unable to see Longships Lighthouse. The mist was a beautiful colour as the sun set beyond. After returning to our campsite, we had a barbecue outside of our tent. While we waited for the food to be cooked, a van selling fish and chips stopped by. The best part of the night was ordering chips with sausages, burgers or a fish and chip van.
We enjoyed breakfasting in a peaceful location the next day. I felt very fortunate to be living in Cornwall when the views of rolling hills were seen beyond the campsite. The break was much needed and it was in a beautiful location.
The facilities were very useful. Even with another guest, there were plenty of sinks. The toilets and showers were both very clean. The staff was doing different jobs while packing up. Another man mowed the lawn while another painted a fence. The site is kept immaculate.
This site is perfect for couples, families and even dogs (especially since they are allowed). We are always impressed by the Camping and Caravanning Club for their friendly and helpful staff and campsites. The location of this particular campsite was excellent, with many options for day-trips and beautiful views. Will definitely return!
