Camping is a great option in September. The campsites are offering reduced rates, summer visitors have returned home to their homes and the weather remains warm. The evenings may be getting darker and there is a greater chance of rain or cold weather, but on a sunny Sunday in September, spending a day at the beach in Sennen can’t get any better.
We decided to visit the beautiful Camping and Caravanning Club site at Sennen Cove this weekend. The 72-pitch campsite is within easy walking distance to the lovely Sennen Beach, and also the less visited Gwynver Beach. The campsite is small, peaceful and has many facilities. It includes a modern and stylish children’s playground and several playing fields.
We started cooking dinner after we arrived. We were in a hurry and did not want to bring a lot of equipment. So we decided to test out some dehydrated camping and hiking food by Real Turmat.
It’s easy and quick to boil water on a campsite with a strong>a href=”http://wildtide.co.uk/2016/04/25/campingaz-party-grill-4000-review/”>Campingaz PartyGrill/a>/strong> and petromax kettle. You only need to boil water on the campsite, and this is done quickly with Campingaz PartyGrill or Petromax Kettle. The Coleman fyrestorm I recently reviewed is a great option for boiling water on the road.
After boiling the water, remove the push-seal top and pour the hot water into the packet (up to fill line). Stir well, making sure to get all the corners. Re-seal with the seal, wait a couple of minutes (time varies from one pack to another), then open the package, give it a good stir, and enjoy!
Once you have poured the water in, you can hold the bag and heat your hands. The perfect solution for a cold mountaintop or night! Before you add water, they don’t seem very appetising, but once you do, all the meat and vegetables expand, and the meal looks as tasty as a dehydrated one can. The instructions on the package (which I agree with) say to leave it in the packet as this will prevent it from losing heat. Pouring it into a dish will only make the food colder faster.
It was amazing how delicious the food tasted. The meals were delicious and full of flavour. The taste is amazing. I have eaten hiking meals in the past that were bland. But the Real Turmat meals are delicious. The variety of food they have was impressive. We chose the lamb casserole, and the reindeer broth. It was my first time having reindeer broth, so it’s hard to compare. But I really liked it. You can adjust the consistency of your meals by adding more water or less.
We had briefly walked around the campsite to use the water and facilities during our brief time spent preparing the meal. All the signs for water, recycling and bins were very clear. Some of them had even illuminated signage so you could easily find them at night. It was a very quiet site and everyone we met there were polite, friendly and courteous. The pass coded gate on the entrance was very secure. It made me feel safe.
It was the main field that had some of the most spacious and neatly laid out hard-standing pitches. The entire Sennen Cove Campsite was kept in immaculate conditions. It’s amazing how the campsite is kept so clean and in good shape at the end the season.
As we finished eating, the sun began to set. The view of the sea from our field became even more spectacular. The coast path was at the foot of the small field. We wanted to be closer to the ocean and have a better look.
The site was very quiet, and the insulation in my van was doing the job and keeping us warm. We woke early to try out the shower. These showers deserve to be mentioned in the review, as they’re some of my favourites I’ve seen in recent times. They didn’t require a token, or even a trivial amount of 20p to get hot water. These showers were almost perfect. They had a clean cubicle, constant hot water and remained very warm. We went back to our van, put on the kettle and prepared to have a cup of tea and try some Real Turmat pouches for breakfast.
They have a porridge that can be prepared with either hot or cold liquid. It was great on a dewy, cool morning. The cinnamon taste was light and spicy. It filled me up in the morning. This was way better than my usual cereal, and I would love to have this for breakfast everyday! These meals are perfect for those who are on the go and do not have time to prepare a meal outside or are looking for something light.
They are very light, and I will use them to backpack. Then you could boil and purify some stream water and make a hot and nutritious meal. It was a breeze to get ready, as there is no need for washing! We then headed off to see the sights in our area. Lands End is just a few miles away, as are the Minack Theatre and the Cornish Coast Path. There’s also countless filming sites from BBC Poldark. Sennen Beach is a beautiful beach in Cornwall and very near.
It was a beautiful day. The sun came out full-force by midday when our friends arrived. It’s definitely t-shirt weather and shorts in September. It’s not clear why, but the water and sand seem to always be whiter in the west. We sat down on the beach and chatted with them after we met.
The sea tempts us to go in. We had to take the bellyboards and surf out of the car and jump into the water. It was a small surf but it was still fun. And, because we were out of season the beach wasn’t crowded. Camping in September makes sense because the sea temperature is almost identical to that of August. We went to Surfers Den, just above the beach for a drink after drying ourselves off. The Sennen Cove Caravanning and Camping Club Site was a wonderful place to stay for a weekend. This is a great family-friendly campsite that’s well maintained and clean.
